may you find inspiration in the future, but may you find love in the details.

Progression: Through the writing of poetry

My experience in Writing for Poetry has had a tremendous effect on me and my writing. I am now able to write consciously on a variety of topics, not just love. Before I explained my writing process in terms of a spiritual activity, but now it is so much more As I write I pay attention to how my line breaks affect the reading of the poetry and how punctuation can help me to add dramatic effects to my poetry. My use of line breaks and punctuation can be seen most prominently in my poem “Success” I played with using a short sentence to begin each stanza and then a longer. My boss at my internship always tells me shorter sentences are more powerful so I had that thought when I wrote this poem. I also have learned to focus on how sounds affect my poems. For example in my poem previously titled “The Untertaking,” which I renamed the “Persuasion”, I played with using works with softer sounds and gentler images to create an image of persuasion. I also learned a purpose for using repetition. Repetition is something that generally comes normally to me because in my writing I often connect the title with the ending of poetry. My use of repetition can be seen most in my poems “Unbroken Bonds,” and “My Mother is.” One of the most important things I have learned from this course is the importance of revision. I will honestly say that I don’t revise anything other than checking for edits. I firmly believe in when its done its done, but I have learned that when I leave a piece of work and come back I often come back with a new perspective that shifts the poem. Revision has led to some pretty significant changes in my writing which you may notice. My chapbook is an excellent representation of how I have grown as a writer. I have poems on a variety of topics ranging from happiness, success, vision, identity, and of course love. It is my hope that you enjoy reading it as I plan to have it printed and given to my mother for Christmas.

“The past did affect the present and the future, in ways you could see and a million ones you couldn’t. Time wasn’t a thing you could divide easily; there was no defined middle or beginning or end. I could pretend to leave the past behind, but it would not leave me.” — Sarah Dessen , Just Listen (via foxgloves)

“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.” —James Baldwin   (via ishhara)
